Central America has captured my heart with its rich cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and endless adventures. As a woman in my 50s, I’ve found that this part of the world offers something for everyone—whether you’re seeking adrenaline-pumping thrills, fascinating history, or simply a chance to soak in nature’s untouched beauty. In this article, I want to share with you the best places I’ve visited in Central America, giving you a taste of what made each destination unforgettable for me.
Discovering the Wonders of Costa Rica
Costa Rica, my first stop, was a land of awe and wonder. The Arenal Volcano, a majestic sight, stood close enough to touch. Hiking through the nearby trails, the towering peak alone was enough to quicken my pulse. The Monteverde Cloud Forest, with its misty treetops, felt like a journey to another world.
But what really got my blood pumping was ziplining through the jungle canopy. At first, I was nervous because, being in my 50s, I am not as adventurous as I once was. Flying through the trees was exhilarating, like a rollercoaster but surrounded by nature. Another favorite memory was white-water rafting down the Pacuare River. I couldn’t help but laugh as I navigated the rapids, my heart pounding with excitement.
Costa Rica’s commitment to eco-friendly travel resonated with me, too. I noticed it in everything from the hotels to the tours I took. There’s something incredibly refreshing about traveling through a country that values sustainability. And the people—Ticos, as they call themselves—were some of the warmest and most welcoming I’ve met. If you’re planning a trip, learning a bit of Spanish and saying “pura vida” will go a long way!
Exploring the Rich Culture of Guatemala
Guatemala was next on my journey, and the history here is absolutely spellbinding. Walking through Tikal National Park was like stepping back in time. The towering Mayan pyramids emerging from the jungle connected me to ancient civilizations in a way I hadn’t experienced before. I could almost hear the echoes of the past as I wandered through the ruins.
Antigua, with its charming colonial streets and volcano backdrop, became a city close to my heart. The blend of modernity and history was captivating, but what truly stood out was the warmth of the locals. One day, sipping coffee in a quaint café, I found myself in a lively conversation with a local artisan about the upcoming Semana Santa celebrations. These moments of connection enriched my experience.

And let’s talk about the food! I had my first taste of pepian in Antigua—a hearty stew bursting with flavor. Every meal felt like a cultural experience, and I couldn’t get enough of the street food, from fresh tortillas to stuffed plantains.
Soaking Up the Sun in Belize
Belize was my sanctuary of tranquility. Days spent lounging on the beaches of Caye Caulker, where the motto is “Go Slow,” Were exactly what I needed. The island’s laid-back charm was a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. With its vibrant energy, Ambergris Caye offered a little more excitement, especially with its proximity to the Great Blue Hole—a diving spot I couldn’t resist. Even though I’m not a scuba diver, the snorkeling here was incredible!
The Belize Barrier Reef was like a dream. I swam among vibrant corals, colorful fish, and even a friendly nurse shark, feeling entirely at peace with the world. For someone like me who loves exploring history, the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich were a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Embracing the Charm of Nicaragua
I fell in love with Nicaragua’s laid-back vibe, especially in Granada. The colorful colonial buildings and lively squares made every stroll through the city feel like a step back in time. I found myself returning again and again to the shores of Lake Nicaragua, where I’d sit and watch the sunset over the water, the sky turning brilliant shades of pink and orange.
Ometepe Island was an adventurer’s dream. I hiked one of the volcanoes there—not an easy feat, but worth every step for the views. And after a long day of exploring, the natural pools were a refreshing treat.
One of my most memorable experiences was volcano boarding at Cerro Negro. Yes, in my 50s, I climbed up an active volcano and slid down on a board! It was thrilling and nerve-wracking, but I’ll never forget the adrenaline rush as I sped down the volcanic ash.
The Beauty and Splendor of Panama
Panama was the perfect conclusion to my Central American adventure. The Panama Canal is one of those places that I’d read about but couldn’t fully appreciate until I saw it in person. Watching the massive ships pass through the locks was oddly mesmerizing, and learning about the canal’s history gave me a deeper appreciation for its significance.
Panama City itself was an unexpected surprise. The skyline was modern and bustling, but Casco Viejo, the old town, charmed me with its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture. I spent an entire day wandering the streets, sipping coffee, and people-watching from the vibrant plazas.
My final stop was the San Blas Islands. These islands, managed by the indigenous Guna people, were everything I’d hoped for—untouched beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a sense of tranquility I hadn’t found anywhere else. It was the perfect place to reflect on my journey and the incredible experiences I’d had.
